New Aid Package Reflects Changing Regional Roles of U.S., Israel
The US and Israel recently signed an historic deal that secures the next decade of US military aid to Israel - $38 billion over the next decade. While from time to time this defense aid is attacked by critics of Israel or American foreign aid in general, this time there are a number of prominent pro-Israel writers calling on Israel to wean itself off this defense aid. In this article in The Tower, I take on these critics explaining that while Israel could survive without it, it still very much needs this defense aid. Moreover, the US gets far more from this relationship than many realize. I finish with a glance toward the future, suggesting that the current defense relationship is based on the Cold War, which no longer exists, and that the two countries should seek to redefine but not scrap this defense relationship to new geopolitical realities.
